South Strand Republican Club picnic

The South Strand Republican Club held its annual picnic at the Burgess Community Center on S.C. 707 in Murrells Inlet. A few pictures are posted in the Neighbors galleries sections, where you can find photos of your neighbors at various community events. In attendance on Saturday were a slew of local politicians, and some people who hope to soon be local politicians, a.k.a. candidates.

Debate full of fireworks

Sen. Luke Rankin, R-Myrtle Beach, and County Council Chairwoman Liz Gilland, who is challenging Rankin for his senate seat in District 33 in the Republican primary June 10, sparred over who would be the best person to safeguard public dollars at a debate today in Conway.

Rankin questioned whether economic development trips that Gilland took last year to China, Japan and Germany, paid for with her council expense account or by other organizations that receive public funding, was a good use of public dollars.

Gilland fired back that Rankin does not do enough to ensure that public money is being spent wisely in Columbia, pointing to state earmark such as about $75,000 to clean a statue at Francis Marion University, Gilland said.

Gilland, Rankin square off today

Two major Grand Strand political players facing off in a primary for a state senate seat will debate today at Shoney's Restaurant on U.S. 501 in Conway.

Horry County Council Chairwoman Liz Gilland is challenging incumbent Sen. Luke Rankin in the Republican primary on June 10.

The debate will be at 12:15 p.m.

Senate hopefuls at Bikers' political rally

Three potential challengers to U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham are speaking at a political rally today hosted by a motorcyclists' group.

Buddy Witherspoon, a Republican, former Myrtle Beach Mayor Mark McBride, who is running as a petition candidate, and Bob Conley, a Democrat, are all speaking at today's meeting of Horry County ABATE, which stands for "A Brotherhood Against Totalitarian Enactments."

Candidates for the coroner's office and several county council races will also speak, said ABATE member John Easterling.

The meeting starts at noon at Stingray's, 2796 S. Kings Highway in Garden City.

A trio of events await area political enthusiasts in the coming weeks.

  • Horry County Coroner Robert Edge will host a free barbecue meet-and-greet to launch his re-election campaign.

  • In a similar vein, the Myrtle Beach Repulican Club will hear from a panel of local media members on "What makes news" at their meeting later this month. The panel includes newsman Joel Allen and manager David Hart of WPDE TV 15, interim editor John Dawsey of the Aynor Journal, senior editor Carolyn Murray of The Sun News, and Steve Porter of WRNN radio and the Myrtle Beach Herald. Debbie Harwell will moderate.

Stump to honor Clyburn, Spratt

The historic Galivants Ferry Stump will be held May 12 in honor of U.S. Rep. Jim Clyburn and U.S. Rep. John Spratt, organizers announced today.

The Galivants Ferry Stump Speaking, founded in 1876 by the Holliday family, brings politicians and residents together every two years.

The 2008 stump will be held at Pee Dee Farms, the century-old general store in Galivants Ferry, on U.S. 501 where it crosses the Little Pee Dee River.

Bluegrass music and clogging will begin at 4:30 p.m. and local, state and national Democratic candidates will begin speaking at 6 p.m., according to a release from the families of Joseph Holliday and John Monroe Holliday.

County Council candidate to announce

Republican Keith Van Winkle will announce his candidacy for Horry County Council's District 3 seat at a free breakfast starting at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13 at The Donut Man, 200 S. Kings Highway.

Everyone is welcome. Van Winkle will speak on several topics, including county infrastructure, public safety, the environment, airport expansion and landfill, water, sewage and air quality, according to a press release.

South Strand GOP hosts legislators

The South Strand Republican Club will hold its annual legislative breakfast, featuring an open-question session with a number of state lawmakers, next month in Murrells Inlet.

The following legislators will attend: state Sen. Ray Cleary, Sen. Luke Rankin, Rep. Nelson Hardwick, Rep. Thad Viers and Rep. Alan Clemmons.

They will discuss proposed laws covering immigration, taxes, schools, health and others. Anyone is welcome to attend, and 30 minutes will be saved for questions and answers.

Mary Henry elected MB GOP President

The newly-formed Myrtle Beach Republican Club elected officers last week, choosing Mary Henry as its president.

Other officers include vice president Peter Yahnis, secretary Nigel Horonzy and hospitality chairman Tom Middleton.

The next general membership meeting will be at 6 p.m. Feb. 18 at Paradise Resort, 2201 S. Ocean Blvd., Myrtle Beach.

Waccamaw Neck GOP to meet

Members of the Waccamaw Neck Republican Club will meet Feb. 18 to plan the 2008 election year.

Georgetown County Councilman Ray Charlton will speak at the meeting.
