Area product signs with West Virginia

Former Georgetown linebacker Larry Ford signed a national letter of intent Wednesday to finish his career at West Virginia.

Ford graduated from Georgetown in 2005 and spent the past two seasons at Coffeyville Community College (Kansas), a junior college.

He will have three seasons of eligibility remaining for the Mountaineers, who lost coach Rich Rodriguez to Michigan earlier this week. Ford said he contemplated backing away from his commitment after Rodriguez's move but eventually decided he would become a Mountaineer anyway.

Ford is a 6-foot-4, 240-pound specimen with the versatility to play linebacker or defensive end. He starred at defensive end at Coffeyville this season.

Ford will enroll at West Virginia in January, allowing him to participate in spring practice.

State title-winning coach to have surgery

Winning a state championship may not be good for your health, according to the following story written by our sister paper, the Charlotte Observer. Lincolnton beat South Columbus for the N.C. Class 2A state championship Saturday.

Lincolnton High football coach Scott Cloninger learned Tuesday he will need triple bypass heart surgery, just three days after leading the Wolves to the 2A state championship.

Cloninger, 50, said Tuesday that the surgery will be scheduled for sometime next week at Carolinas Medical Center. He said he will find out Wednesday the exact day.

``It's a bummer, being right around Christmas and everything,'' he said. ``But the good news is they found (the blockage) and can treat me. They can take care of it and everything will be OK. They'll make me good for another 50 (years).''

Cloninger said he had failed a stress test Thursday afternoon, and doctors originally wanted him to come in for more tests Friday.

But he postponed the appointment until after the state championship game to not create a distraction. Cloninger has led Lincolnton to the state championship game in two of the past three easons. Lincolnton defeated South Columbus 28-14 Saturday to win its first title since 1993.

CF hires new basketball coach

Carolina Forest has hired Brian Brunson as its head basketball coach, less than a week after former coach Dennis Seman abruptly resigned.

Brunson, who also has coaching stints at Myrtle Beach and Conway, takes over a program that started the season 0-5 and is in need of stability. Seman was named head coach in October, but cited personal reasons in his resignation, according to Horry County Schools officials.

The school system would not detail any issues surrounding the resignation.

Brunson resigned as coach in 2005 to focus on his work at Carolina Forest Community Church.

Tabor City ... gone crazy!

Tabor City, N.C., has got Stallion fever and is ready for Saturday's state championship. I'm writing a story for Saturday about the town's love for South Columbus, but I thought I'd share a photo from a gas station on the state line.
