Doyle, three others chosen at all-stars

Conway catcher Mac Doyle was rewarded for a stellar senior season when he was selected Thursday to represent the South Carolina in prep baseball's version of the Shrine Bowl.

The Wofford signee earned an invite to the S.C.-N.C. Select all-star game after batting over .500 with 10 home runs in the regular season, leading the Tigers to a share of the Region VI-AAAA championship and a No. 1 ranking in the regular-season ending polls.

``You hear about all these big-name players and finally you get to compete with them,'' Doyle said.

Aynor utility player Will Chandler, and Carolina Forest shortstop Ryan Stewart and pitcher Jeremy Knab were chosen for the North-South all-star game. The trio will be teammates on the Class AA-AAA South squad.

All the games will be played June 13-14 at Coastal Carolina's Watson Stadium.

Doyle is the first Conway player selected for the North Carolina-South Carolina game since pitcher Forest Beverly in 2002 and the school's ninth baseball all-star overall. Chandler is Aynor's sixth all-star, while Carolina Forest's duo were the eighth and ninth in school history.

Chandler is perhaps the area's best hitter, finishing the season with an batting average of .638, an on-base percentage of .723, an area-high 13 home runs and 34 RBIs. He moved into second place on the state's career home run list earlier this month.

Stewart is batting .432 with 21 RBIs, a team-high eight home runs and 12 stolen bases from the leadoff spot. Knab is 6-0 with a 1.4 ERA and 46 strikeouts in 45 innings this season.
