Citing the need for a change, Andrews High School football coach Steve Hart resigned on Tuesday. Hart, who served as an assistant coach in last month's Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas, told his team about his resignation this afternoon, Andrews Athletic Director Adrian Smith said.
Hart was 15-28 in four seasons at Andrews, appearing in the playoffs in each of his first three seasons. The Yellow Jackets were 1-9 this past season - the gave up 355 points and only scored 96 - missing the playoffs for the first time since 2001.
"I just thought it was time for a change," Hart said. "We made some good strides in some ways and in some ways we haven't. Sometimes a change is good. We had a tough year, but I think we made some strides."
Hart has spent 15 seasons as a head coach. After leading Harriman (Tenn.) to an appearance in the 1994 state championship game, Hart spent 10 years at North Myrtle Beach, compiling a 51-59 record.
Hart said he plans to continue his coaching career, but he would not comment further.
I am sorry that he has chosen to resign - but hopefully, just maybe Andrews can get back into being a contender in football in SC. It saddens me as a former AHS athlete that the main sport that we are winners in now seems to be cross country (not to knock it or the athletes that are there now). Hopefully this will spur the program into a better position at the end of next season! GOOOOO JACKETS!
