Former Waccamaw football standout Eric Sparkman, who is spending this year at Fork Union (Va.) prep school, isn't likely to sign a National Letter of Intent on National Signing Day. Fork Union (Va.) coach John Shuman said earlier this week that Sparkman thrived on both sides of the ball last fall and has a promising college career in front of him. However, he also said that Sparkman needed more work academically before he tried to promote him to college suitors.
So, Shuman plans to spend the next few months making sure that Sparkman is doing his due dillegence in the classroom. Then Shuman will pitch his services to college coaches when they make their annual, late-spring visits in April and May.
``We love him,'' Shuman said. ``He's had a good year for us.''
Shuman said Sparkman could sign with a smaller Division II school now, but he believes he has Division I potential and wants to find him at home at that level. Shuman said he placed one of his tailbacks at UMASS last July, so Sparkman shouldn't panic when Signing Day comes and goes next week.
Sparkman played running back, option quarterback and corner for Fork Union last season. Shuman believes he would play either corner or slot receiver at the next level.
