Georgetown's Stephon Leak signed Thursday to play football at Newberry College.
Leak played fullback and linebacker with the Bulldogs, but an ACL injury during the fifth game of last season kept him out for the rest of his senior campaign.
Georgetown football coach Tyronne Davis said he believes Newberry is looking at Leak for defense.
Leak, 5-foot-8 and 175 pounds, carried the ball 16 times for 146 yards at fullback and recorded 22 tackles on defense in his half season in 2008.
''He would need a little more size for fullback, [but] he is a very explosive player,'' Davis said. ``To me he would make a heck of a strong safety. He has that body build.''
Leak, who also considered North Greenville, runs around 4.8 seconds in the 40-yard dash.
``He was a team captain for us before he got hurt,'' Davis said. ``He is a dedicated young man. He is a good kid, both in the classroom and on the field.''
Georgetown has three other players that could play college football next season, but have yet to make a college decision.
David said 6-2, 235-pound Gary Sessions is looking at Newberry and Chowan, but the lineman is still waiting to get his test scores to see if he has qualified. Malik Bey, a 5-0, 170-pound defensive back/wide receiver, is looking at Presbyterian. Bey has already qualified.
Davis said it was likely Kinard Gadsden-Gilliard, a linebacker/tight end in football and a forward in basketball, will wait until after the March 21 Carolinas All-Star Basketball Classic to make a decision on his college plans. The 6-5 Gadsden-Gilliard, who also played in the North-South All-Star football game, is weighing his options between football and basketball.
