The 2009 North/South All-Star wrestling event will be Friday and Saturday at North Myrtle Beach High School and will have a new format this year. Along with the traditional North All Stars vs. South All Stars matchup, a Team South Carolina will compete against Team Georgia.
The North vs. South dual match will take place at 6 p.m. Friday and will be followed by Team South Carolina taking on Team Georgia at 7:45 p.m. On Saturday, the dream matchups will be held beginning at noon.
Three area wrestlers will compete in the North-South matchup: Loris' Maurice Morris, who captured the Class AA state title at 171 pounds Saturday, and Myrtle Beach's Caleb Dejardins will wrestle for the South team, while North Myrtle
Beach's Taylor Collins will wrestle for the North squad.
Some of the top matches in the Team South Carolina vs. Team Georgia matchup are:
125/130 pounds | Joel Stafford, Eastside (Ga.), and Luis Ponce, Rockdale County (Ga.), will face Brandon Fiex, Fort Mill, and Wesley Dallas, Fort Dorchester. Fiex, Stafford, and Ponce are all two-time state champs while Dallas is a three-time finalist and has one state championship.
135 pounds | Joey Lazor, Union Grove (Ga.), vs. Eddie Coles, Eastside. Coles is a four-time state champ and nationally ranked. Lazor is a two-time state champ who is nationally ranked and committed to wrestle in college at Northern Iowa.
152 pounds | Jay Fowler, Jefferson (Ga.), vs. Zach McCormick, Westside. Fowler is a three-time state champ and McCormick is a two-time state champ.
160 pounds | Anthony Fretwell, Henry County (Ga.), vs. Zane Newton, Emerald. Fretwell is a two-time state champ and Newton is a three-time state champ.
