Myrtle Beach senior lineman James Power received a scholarship offer from Marshall University in Huntington, W.Va., recently. Although his father, Chuck Power, said the Thundering Herd want James as a tight end.
James Power played his sophomore season as an offensive lineman before starting the 2008 season at tight end. He was moved back to the offensive line midway through the season and his father said James has been told he will play offensive line for the Seahawks this coming season.
James Power impressed the Marshall coaches during a camp at the school earlier this summer. Power is 6-foot-3 and 225 pounds.
``He is still open, but he is not going to drag it out real long,'' Chuck Power said. ``We are going to ride up [to visit Marshall] as a family and check it out sometime this month.
``He has some small schools that are probably going to offer him, but this is his first Division I offer. We have a couple of Big Ten schools, a couple of ACC schools that are interested but no offers from any of them yet.''
James Power doesn't have blazing speed but continues to get faster, his father said.
``He runs a sub-5.0 40,'' Chuck Power said. ``and he is getting faster.''
James' older brother, former Seahawk Andrew Power, is now playing tight end at South Carolina. Andrew Power said at Myrtle Beach's Fourth of July Shootout, a 7-on-7 tournament held June 26, that he had moved up to second team at tight end for the Gamecocks after walking on at the school.
''[Andrew] had offers from all of the small people -- The Citadel, Wofford, Presbyterian, all those guys. He decided he wanted to play major college football. So [Steve] Spurrier Jr. said he could walk on as a preferred walk-on. So he decided to do that,'' Chuck Power said. ``He is just moving right on up. He has worked hard to get where he is.''
