Freshman Moody to start at quarterback for Conway

Conway football coach Chuck Jordan confirmed that freshman Mykal Moody will be the Tigers' starting quarterback when the season begins Friday night.

Moody, who had initially been listed as a backup quarterback, started the Tigers' matchup against St. James last Friday in the CNB Kickoff Classic.

``He allows us to run our entire offense,'' Jordan said. ``You got some quarterbacks that can run, some that throw it and he can do both. The fact that he can do both allows us to use the whole [offensive] package.''

It is the first time a freshman has started at quarterback in Jordan's 27 years as Tigers coach.

``I have started a sophomore on two occasions and they both ended up playing collegiately,'' Jordan said. ``If they are good enough to start at that age at our place then they are usually pretty good.''

Moody looked very good in Friday's jamboree. He was in control, made some nice throws and ran the ball hard. He actually looked to deliver a blow instead of take one when he tucked it and ran. As with most kids this young and talented, the game looked easy for him.

Inevitably, Moody will draw comparisons to Myrtle Beach superstar quarterback Everett Golson. They do look a lot alike, but I didn't see Golson two years ago. Right now, it's obviously no comparison. The one thing I do know about Golson is that in his debut at the CNB Kickoff Classic, his first pass was a long touchdown throw. Moody didn't have that type of success on Friday, but he will undoubtedly add some excitement to the Tigers.

Moody is listed at 5-foot-9 and 170 pounds on the Tigers' preseason roster. Golson, a junior, is currently listed at 6-1 and 175.

Conway opens its season at North Myrtle Beach at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
