Two big area position battles became a little clearer on Friday night during Conway's 30-0 win over host Georgetown in each team's first scrimmage of the fall.
The battle for the starting tailback position for Georgetown appears to be settled, with explosive sophomore Devante Geathers earning the spot. Conway's starting quarterback position is for now in the hands of senior D.J. Samuel.
Samuel started the scrimmage for the Tigers and took a majority of the snaps. Freshman Mychal Moody played several series as well and led the Tigers on their first scoring drive.
``A lot of times these scrimmages are just a whole lot of big plays,'' said Conway coach Chuck Jordan (in photo above working with Samuel, No. 6, and Moody, No. 11, ``particularly early scrimmages because defensively they are going to make mistakes and offensively you are going to have turnovers. And we did that. ...
``I would have hoped to have done a better job tackling. I thought they had some good backs. and we probably didn't tackle and wrap up [very well]. I have learned too, it is real hard to comment on what you did before you look at the film. And so we are going to look at the film in the morning and see. We will probably have some people we are going to have to replace.''
Geathers rushed for 102 yards. The 6-foot, 180-pounder showed good speed and vision against the Tigers' defense. He will be one to watch over the next several seasons.
``I felt like we got tired quick,'' Georgetown coach Tyronne Davis said. ``The first quarter, we actually played pretty good. We gave up two big plays -- a long pass play that they eventually scored on and a long punt return that they returned inside the 10 and they scored on. Overall, this is a good scrimmage for us. I feel like we are not where we need to be, but this is something we need to see.''
