Eight area soccer players have been named to the South Carolina High School Soccer Coaches Association's All-State team.
Waccamaw, the only school along the Grand Strand still competing in the playoffs, had three boys and three girls named All-State while boys Region VII-AAA champion North Myrtle Beach had two players selected to the AAA team, the coaches organization announced Sunday.
The Waccamaw girls, who will host Academic Magnet at 6 p.m. tonight in the Class AA Lower State championship, were represented by three seniors: forward Taylor Player; forward Chandler Murphy; and defender Candler Smith. Player, the reigning The Sun News Toast of the Coast Girls Soccer Player of the Year, has 36 goals and 20 assists on the season and is one of five finalists for the AA-A girls player of the year. It's Player's fourth all-state selection while Murphy and Smith made the team for the second year in a row.
All three of Waccamaw's boys selections were also seniors including: forward Tyler Staub; defender Luke Ellerbe; and defender Tommy Collins. The Waccamaw boys will play at Bishop England on Tuesday night in the AA Lower State finals.
North Myrtle Beach had the lone underclassmen from the area named All-State in junior goalkeeper Kyle Smith. Region VII-AAA Player of the Year Travis Buis, a senior forward, was the other Chief to be honored.
It's the second year year in a row Ellerbe and Kyle Smith were named all-state.
