This week's top performers:
Socastee running back P.J. Brave:
The senior had 249 yards rushing on 27 carries, including two 1-yard touchdown runs with the second one coming on a fourth-and-goal at the one in overtime. He also added the game-winning two-point conversion run following his overtime touchdown.

Myrtle Beach quarterback Everett Golson: The North Carolina commit completed 18 of 22 pass attempts for 302 yards and four touchdowns (24 yards, 17, 6 and 44). He also had a 22-yard touchdown run.

Myrtle Beach receiver Donte Sumpter: The East Carolina commit had seven catches for 106 yards with touchdown catches of 24 and 17 yards.

Myrtle Beach receiver Dallas Goodman: The senior had five catches for 108 with two touchdown catches (6 and 44 yards).

Myrtle Beach receiver Tramond Wilson: The junior had nine catches for 109 yards and two touchdowns (1 and 6 yards).

Loris running back R.J. Brown: The senior had 144 rushing yards on 22 carries with touchdown runs of 5, 9, 5 and 32 yards.

Conway quarterback Mykal Moody: The sophomore had 145 yards and three touchdowns rushing before he was injured in the third quarter. His scoring runs were from 2, 29 and 46 yards, respectively.

Aynor running back Devante Kinlaw: The junior had 214 yards on just 12 carries, including touchdown runs of 8 and 67 yards.

Carvers Bay running back Tevin Richard: The senior carried the ball 17 times for 154 yards and two touchdowns (1 and 53 yards).

Random thoughts from Friday:
Revenge time?:
Myrtle Beach and quarterback Everett Golson looked as good as advertised in their opener. And now they turn their attention to Byrnes, the AAAA behemoth that drilled the Seahawks 65-14 last season. Byrnes isn't the same Byrnes from a year ago -- Marcus Lattimore will be playing Thursday against Southern Miss instead of Friday against Myrtle Beach -- and no one will likely say it, but Mickey Wilson will want to even the score. I am not saying they can, but if the Seahawks are able to return the favor they will do it with fervor. This may be your best chance until the playoffs to see Golson play the whole game.

I hate to say it: But the officials at the game I covered Friday night were horrendous. On two separate plays officials blew a play dead in the middle of it for no obvious reason. On one play, a quarterback was surrounded in the backfield and squirmed his way through the defenders and broke free, yet the official blows the whistle 10 seconds into the play, with the quarterback breaking tackles down the sideline. After everyone looked around at each other, one official drops a flag and then calls a false start on the offense. On the other, a player fielded a kickoff and is breaking tackles on the left side of the field, as he breaks free he drops the ball, but it bounces right back into his hands as he is running, and all of a sudden a whistle blows. The player is at least five yards from the sideline. One call went against the home team and one against the visitor, so it's not like there was favoritism going on. I know officials are giving their time and trying hard, but it was real obvious this crew was lost. It's not the first time I have seen some bad officiating, but the two stoppages in the middle of plays really left a very bad impression. I don't rail on officials, but I couldn't keep from saying something about those two plays.

Braves bounce back, or do they?: Socastee was able to bounce back against West Brunswick, but it's hard to say how much the win means -- other than getting the zero out of the first column. West Brunswick got drilled 42-0 in their season opener against a school that won one game the year before. And we know what Carolina Forest did against Myrtle Beach a week after manhandling the Braves. So what does Friday's win mean? Probably not much.

Tell me who: There are five area teams that are now 2-0. It's early so you may know easily, but it's still pretty surprising. Got 'em all. Loris and Waccamaw may not be too surprising, but Andrews, Aynor and Green Sea Floyds are the other 2-0 teams (Myrtle Beach is 1-0). It's not to say state championships are on their way this season, but it's a good sign for all three clubs. Out of those surprising three, I think Andrews is the most legit. The Yellow Jackets are a ton better now than they were when Steve Blanchard took over and there are athletes down there. We'll find out for sure, because after next week at Georgetown, the Yellow Jackets get Carvers Bay, Timberland and Lake City in a four-game stretch (C.E. Murray is in there, too).

Moody blues: Conway coach Chuck Jordan didn't sound overly concerned about the extent of sophomore quarterback Mykal Moody's ankle injury, but we won't know for sure for a few days. But an ankle injury, even just a sprain, takes time to heal -- time off of it. Wando comes to Conway this week and the Tigers are at Socastee on Sept. 10. It wouldn't be the worst two games for Moody to sit if needed -- although Wando did drill Ridge View 31-0 on Friday. We'll try to get an update on the injury early this coming week.
