Just the same, the Seahawks recorded yet another win over a Class AAAA opponent Thursday night. The Myrtle Beach defense had a great night, helping Mickey Wilson’s team to a 21-14 road victory at West Florence.
"Those guys are carrying us right now," Wilson said of his defense. "They had to play a boatload of snaps last night. We went three-and-out on a lot of series. They stuck their neck out and played well."
If you're playing the Pigskin Pick 'Em home game, you know that this week The Sun News/WBTW News 13 contest will start including several higher profile college games from around the state and country. If you haven't signed up yet, you can still do so now.
For the purposes of this space, though, we'll continue to stick with the high school games. Our picks for this week run each Thursday, and as I've done in the first two weeks of prep action, I'll expand on my selections here (minus Myrtle Beach, which I - and every other pollster - accurately picked to beat West Florence Thursday night).
We've got a full slate of high school games this week, as all 13 Grand Strand teams are in action.
We broke down Myrtle Beach's big win over Irmo and Conway's loss to Northwestern in the Derrick Law Firm Classic, as well as some other games around the area. We also previewed the Week 2 slate, putting extra emphasis on Carolina Forest's trip to St. James.
Myrtle Beach moved up one spot in the most recent Class AAA S.C. High School Football Media Poll, released Tuesday afternoon.
The Seahawks, who defeated Irmo Saturday in the inaugural Derrick Law Firm Kickoff Classic, are now the No. 2 team in the class. They also remain the only Grand Strand team ranked in the top 10 of any class.
While wondering how many new Notre Dame football fans there are on the Grand Strand...
Two of the top programs in the area have to wait an extra day to play this week - with Myrtle Beach and Conway playing in the Derrick Law Firm Kickoff Classic Saturday. However, that gives fans of those programs an opportunity to take in a number of other games Friday.
Each year, Conway football fans are some of the best in the area when it comes to attending games.
However, there are plenty more who can't make it out every Friday. So they tune in to WGTR-FM, 107.9. Somewhere in the neighborhood of 99 percent of them had never heard another play-by-play announcer not named Mike Green.
In case you missed it, another portion of the collaboration between The Sun News and WBTW News 13 went live in Thursday's print edition. Each week, the newspaper and TV station will each have three media members picking high school, college and NFL games.
Area high school football teams kick off their seasons, coaches and players start dreaming up playoff scenarios via what they need to get there and parents commence a minimum of 10 weeks of nail biting.
Tee up the pigskin, it’s time to go. But not before we release our Grand Strand Football All-Name Team.
