Six days after Bradley Adams decided not to allow his team to shake hands with Wilson coaches and players, the Georgetown football coach again defended his actions.
On Wednesday, the reasons for Adams pulling his team off the field became a little more clear via a video published on the Web site SCVarsity.com. The clips show players from both Socastee and Georgetown on the receiving end of unnecessary contact from defensive players for Region VII-AAA opponent Wilson.
The latter part of the video shows a Wilson player jumping offside and then knocking Georgetown quarterback Caleb Hughes to the ground with a shot to the helmet.
Five
area players, including two each from Myrtle Beach and Georgetown, were named
the SCADA North-South All-Star Football game Tuesday, the organization
announced.
Seahawk
linebacker Octavius Thomas and kicker Max Huggins, Bulldog offensive lineman
Dillon Alford and defensive end Anthony Blair and Socastee linebacker Adam
Crane were all selected for the game. It will be played Dec. 8 at Myrtle Beach’s
Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium. The 64th annual all-star game will kick
off at 12:30 p.m.
It
will be an opportunity for the five players to be honored for their high school
accomplishments, but also a chance at extended college looks.
Class AAA, AA and A teams have their playoff seeds (or lack thereof). Now, they have their final regular-season statewide top 10s, as well.
Three area teams remained in the polls after their first 10 games. Socastee stayed at No. 2 in Class AAA, with Myrtle Beach remaining at No. 5 in the same poll.
Carvers Bay, which beat Timmonsville to improve to 9-1, win the Region VIII-A title and earn the top overall seed in the Class A, Division I Lower State playoffs, also stayed at No. 5 in that class.
Update: Because of some confusion within the Class AA, Division II bracket, several games were changed. It affected Andrews' opponent. Originally, it was released that Andrews would play Barnwell. However, after re-calculating points, Andrews was matched up against Mullins.
All playoff match-ups for area teams in Classes AAA-A are out. All games are listed below. Check Sunday's edition of The Sun News for a full story involving area teams.
Socastee (10-0) will have a first-round match-up against Crestwood. Myrtle Beach (9-1) will also have a home game, playing Manning.
Georgetown was the third and final team out of Region VII-AAA, and the Bulldogs will head to Marlboro County.
According to Florence Morning News reporter Lou Bezjak, things got a little chippy in the Georgetown-Wilson game last night.
Honestly, I'm a bit surprised that doesn't happen more often. Teams are ultra-emotional this time of year, and both squads last night had playoff implications on the line. In the end, though, Georgetown did enough to hold off Wilson, and now the Region VII-AAA standings can be finalized even before the last two games this evening.
Near the top of the list - No. 4, to be specific - was Conway's Chuck Jordan. The Tigers coach and athletics director eclipsed six figures annually ($100,295) this school year after a sub-two-percent raise from last year. Needless to say, people see the overall number and tend to get fired up.
But what The State did not do (simply because it focused more on the Midlands area) is put some context behind Jordan's salary.
Week 10 may not have the feel of some of the last few weeks.
Region champs are already decided in Region VII-AAA and Region VIII-AA. Still, playoff spots are up for grabs for several other teams, and in the case of Class AA squads, seeding for the postseason is not locked in.
Still, area teams like Conway, Carvers Bay, St. James, Georgetown and a handful of others haven't been taking the last week of the regular season lightly.
St. James football coach Mark Fischer is in the midst of his biggest struggle.
And while his bone cancer diagnosis has nothing to do with football, his connection with the game is helping. It continues this weekend, as the first of multiple planned fundraisers for the coach takes place at the Beaver Bar in Murrells Inlet.
The event, part of the "Fist Up For Fischer" campaign, runs from 8 a.m.-noon Sunday. Breakfast is $5, and additional donations will be accepted. There is also an all-day event planned at Creek Ratz on the Marshwalk for November 18. We'll provide more details for that as they become available.
Fischer's prognosis has not been great so far. But he's not giving up, and he's said the support from the community is a major reason why.
Jeff Zell from WBTW News 13, Matt Parris from ESPN Radio Myrtle Beach and I said we were going to cut down on the small talk.
The result? This week's Web chat went a few minutes longer. This may be the least amount of time we've ever spent on Socastee or Myrtle Beach, but for good reason. The Braves and Seahawks - two squads with playoff seeds already decided - took a back seat to Conway, Georgetown, Loris, Aynor and Carvers Bay. Those five teams are involved in huge games this week that will dicate so much in the coming weeks.
Poll came in a little late Wednesday night, but as it turned out, there was very little movement in terms of Grand Strand teams.
Socastee remained No. 2 in the statewide Class AAA rankings, and fellow Region VII-AAA team Myrtle Beach stayed at No. 5. Carvers Bay, in advance of its showdown with Timmonsville, also remained at No. 5 in the Class A rankings.
The winner of the Bears-Whirlwinds game will win Region VII-A, and for Carvers Bay, that would also likely be enough to warrant a No. 1 overall seed in the Class A, Division I playoffs.
