Socastee QB Renfrow held out of practice

Socastee wasn’t going to roll the dice with starting quarterback Hunter Renfrow Tuesday.

Renfrow, one of the area’s best players and the catalyst for the Braves’ 11-0 start, did not practice this morning after coming down with a stomach virus over the weekend. Coach Tim Renfrow (also Hunter’s father), said the junior was also held out of Monday’s practice.

“We saw the weather today, and we knew it was going to be wet and probably a little chilly,” Tim Renfrow said. “It just wasn’t worth taking any chances. We were predominantly defense today anyway.”

Socastee, who will play Berkeley (5-6) at home Friday in the second round of the Class AAA playoffs, will need Hunter Renfrow at close to full strength if the Braves are going to continue their undefeated season.

Through 11 games, he has rushed for a team-high 1,240 yards and 18 touchdowns and thrown for another 499 yards and eight scores. Those figures helped the Braves to eight straight double-digit victories, the school’s first region title and a top overall seed in the Lower State playoffs.

Tim Renfrow said the team’s concern with Hunter Renfrow missing practice time this late in the season – after countless snaps in practice and approximately 500-600 more in games – is minimized.

“You don’t like that. But if it was earlier in the year, it would be a big difference,” Tim Renfrow said. “Because it is so far into the year, it’s not as big of a deal.”

The coach said he would not know until Wednesday if Hunter Renfrow would practice then, although he gave no indication that he was in jeopardy of missing this week’s game.

Socastee’s game against Berkeley will kick off at 7:30 p.m. Friday. If the Braves win, they’ll face the winner of Swansea-Hartville next week. That game will also be at Socastee.
