In what will be the final statewide coaches high school basketball rankings of 2012, two area schools doubled up.
The North Myrtle Beach boys team moved into the Class AAA top 10, ranked No. 8 in the poll released this week. It joins the Chiefs girls team, which remained in the top 5.
Carvers Bay's boys (No. 6, Class A) and girls (No. 10) also remained in the rankings.
The South Carolina vs. North Carolina format of the Derrick Law Firm Carolinas Clash is set for 2013, and as expected, there has been some minor adjustments made to the schedule.
The Carolinas Clash, originally named the Surf and Turf Kickoff Classic prior to sponsorship and format-related name changes, will open with Myrtle Beach's game against Richmond County (N.C.) on Aug. 30. That game will be played at 7:30 p.m.
The following day, Wilmington Hoggard will play Irmo, Southeast Raleigh with take on Dutch Fork and Wilmington New Hanover will cap off the night against Conway. All four games will take place at Myrtle Beach's Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium.
Under a new proposal being considered the South Carolina High School League, every football team in the state could be facing major changes to the regular season, region play and postseason.
The new proposal calls for a five-division system with five-team regions. Each region (except for certain Division I regions) would qualify just two schools for a 16-team playoffs, and the number of state titles each season would decrease from seven to five.
The change will help some schools more than others, but it will certainly decrease what has been a growing complaint that the current system is too "watered down."
