Golson third former Seahawk playing for football title this year

In just a few hours, millions of eyes will be focused on former Myrtle Beach and current Notre Dame quarterback Everett Golson.

The redshirt freshman has helped the Fighting Irish to the national championship game, and coach Brian Kelly's team is a victory over Alabama away from the title.

However, Golson isn't the only former Seahawk whose team played for a college championship this season.

Defensive end Tyler Knox, who graduated in May, played for Butler (Kan.) Community College this season. Butler fell to Iowa Western C.C. in the JUCO national title game. Additionally, Class of 2011 Seahawk LaQuan Anderson was on the roster at Marion (Ind.), a NAIA team that eventually won that organization's championship over Morningside (Iowa).

Knox, who originally signed with North Carolina State last year, did not qualify academically. He was placed at Butler to give him at least one year to work on his grades. In the process, he played in eight games for the Grizzlies, recording 10 tackles, three tackles for loss and a pair of sacks. He also forced three fumbles and recovered another one.

It was that type of influential play that made him stand out for three seasons at Myrtle Beach. He was named a defensive MVP of the 2011 SCADA North-South All-Star Football game. Technically, he will have an open recruitment again once he finishes at Butler, and with Tom O'Brien's firing at N.C. State, that could come into play.

Anderson, a former starter at linebacker and safety for Myrtle Beach, spent the 2011 season at North Carolina Tech Prepatory Christian Academy before transferring to Marian. He did not record any statistics in 2012 for Marian.

That's obviously not the case for Golson. He has put a new spark into Notre Dame that Irish fans have missed.

The Sun News' Alan Blondin has been in South Beach the last few days and has put together a good amount of ink on Golson. He'll be at tonight's game. Give him a Twitter follow here.
