SCBCA state baseball polls, March 24

Five area baseball teams are now ranked among the state’s best, according to the updated South Carolina Baseball Coaches Association polls.

Conway, Socastee, St. James, Waccamaw and Loris were all included in the rankings, released Monday. It was the first appearance in the polls this season for Conway and St. James, although both of those teams had been ranked by other publications.

The Tigers, now ranked No. 10 in Class AAAA, lost their initial series of the Region VI-AAAA schedule to Carolina Forest last week. Coach Anthony Carroll’s team will play non-region games this week before playing South Florence in a three-game series next week.

Fellow Region VI-AAAA foe Sumter remained No. 1 in Class AAAA.

Socastee moved up two spots to No. 4 in Class AAA on the strength of the Braves’ 5-0 start to the season. Socastee, which last year played in the Lower State finals, is ranked ahead of Region VII-AAA rival St. James. The Sharks are now No. 9.

Socastee and St. James will play the first of their two games against each other this season at 6 p.m. Friday at Socastee.

Waccamaw moved up one spot from its preseason ranking to No. 5 in Class AA. Loris (5-2) has started Region VIII-AA play with a pair of wins and now ranked No. 7, down two spots from its preseason ranking.

On Tuesday, the Lions head to Waccamaw.

The only other area team that had been ranked, Aynor, fell out of the Class AA polls this week.
