S.C. softball rankings, April 28

Plenty of Grand Strand softball teams are going into the playoffs with a chip on their shoulder, even if it is real or imaginary.

The final regular-season state rankings were released late Monday, and as it has been for much of the season, only one area team was included. Waccamaw was No. 9 in Class AA. As for the other 11 programs, at least eight of whom are playoff-bound, they'll be on the outside looking in, at least as far as the state's voting coaches are concerned.

Waccamaw, which on Monday defeated Aynor in the regular-season finale and then again in a one-game playoff to determine postseason seeding, will open the postseason at home on Thursday.

The local team with maybe the best shot at a state ranking, North Myrtle Beach (19-3) fell at home Monday night to Georgetown. The Chiefs can still reach 20 wins for the season on Tuesday, when they play host to Wilson.
