Saturday Morning Quarterback, Week 5

Crushing South Columbus (N.C.) and Green Sea-Floyds is one thing.

But after beating Georgetown 20-3 on Friday night, it's clear that Loris' lofty No. 3 ranking in Class AA is for real. The Lions are now undefeated overall and 3-0 against teams from Region VII-AAA. Jamie Snider's team is exactly where many of us believed they would be heading into its own region play.

Loris' defense has allowed just 17 points through five games - a stout 3.4 points per game average - a figure that is far and away the best in all of Class AA. In a matter of weeks, the Lions will have their showdown with division front-runner Dillon.

But what Loris does in the coming three weeks will factor into exactly what that game means.

AROUND THE AREA…

Carolina Forest got a rude awakening against Class AAAA Lexington, getting shell-shocked early en route to a 49-19 loss.

Myrtle Beach continued its recent success in the Victory Bell rivalry against Conway, although it took another crazy finish for the Seahawks to win a high-scoring affair.

Socastee used a late field goal to top sister school St. James.

Aynor couldn't hold onto a two-touchdown lead at Lake View, while Carvers Bay got into the win column for the first time since last season.

POWER RANKINGS:

1. Myrtle Beach

2. Loris

3. Socastee

4. Georgetown

5. Aynor

WEEK 5 GAME BALLS:

Drayton Arnold, QB, Myrtle Beach - The junior threw for 366 yards and a career-high six touchdowns passes. Arnold has now thrown 19 touchdowns in just five games.

Loris defense - Against Georgetown, the Lions force three turnovers (they averaged 3.5 per game coming into this one) and prevented the Bulldogs from making this a game late.

Angelo Sauter, RB, Socastee - The fullback added two more touchdowns for the Braves.

Dyverse Simmons, RB, Carolina Forest - In an otherwise mess of an evening, the sophomore continued to impress, rushing for 122 yards on just 15 carries.
